How to Begin Prevention or Reversing Cognitive Decline using the Bredesen Protocol
Reversing cognitive decline requires a multifaceted approach aimed at assessing your health and addressing various lifestyle, nutritional, emotional and biochemical aspects. Tim Jaeger will direct you through your initial assessments and discuss the ReCODE or PreCODE programs, see below, available through Apollo Health.
The Bredesen Protocol is for anyone who:
- Wants to prevent cognitive decline
- Has a family history of any cognitive issue including Alzheimer’s
- Is suffering from brain fog
- Has noticed subjective cognitive impairment (SCI)
- Has noticed or has been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI)
- Has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia
- Has a history or family history of neurodegenerative diseases.
- Is feeling fatigued
- Wants to focus and become more productive
- Wants to learn how to meditate and live in the moment
- Wants to develop healthy living habits
- Wants support on their journey to health
1) Starting Package – Cognitive Screening & Assessment
Dr Bredesen calls it a ‘Cognoscopy’ a bit like a colonoscopy that you get when you turn over 50 that checks for colorectal cancer. Here the we start to evaluate all the potential contributors and risk factors that are associated with cognitive decline. You will get in person initial and review appointments but it also includes extensive time spent reviewing and assessing of your entire case history (including any brain scans such as MRI, FGD PET, SPECT scan, Amyloid PET), ordering new pathology and gives you a starting framework tailored to your needs. Reversing cognitive decline is multifaceted and also requires a multi-person team approach to maximize all areas needed to be addressed.
This package offers you the bare minimum needed to make a scientifically validated assessment on how to start and what to change to optimize your brain health. Further clinic appointments can be made to continue your own individualized program but are not part of this packaged costs. See below, or click on the links for important ReCODE and PreCODE programs run in conjunction with Apollo Health. We will be able to discuss the details of ReCODE & PreCODE during our initial appointments.
Includes
- 1 x Initial 90 to 120 minute appointment (with Tim Jaeger)
- MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment)
- DASS Score
- Intake questionnaire
- AQ-21 (Alzheimer’s Questionnaire, filled in by close relative or partner)
- 1 x Review appointment 60 to 90 minutes (with Tim Jaeger)
- Initial access to a personalized ‘Lifeboard’ Trello communication and collaborative platform – there is a monthly service fee of $45.00 for continuing access to this essential resource and communication tool.
Pathology & Function Testing
- To make a thorough initial assessment blood pathology and functional testing, outlined below, is recommended but not included in this package cost.
- Pathology testing is essential in determining the major contributing factors or ‘holes’ that need to be addressed.
- Standard blood pathology testing is completed between the initial and first review appointment.
- Please note, prior to blood testing you MUST fast between 8 to 12 hours (no more and no less) water is permitted, we also recommend that you do not undertake excessive exercise 24 hours prior to the testing.
- We insist on fasting for all tests even though some markers do not require a fasted state, this is so we can compare past and future tests with as few variables as possible.
Investment
- $595.00 + ongoing monthly service fee of $45/ month – please note this does not include any of the essential pathology testing *
* While not having general and functional pathology testing is not optional – if you are able to have your pathology tests done through your doctor or have been tested in the last month then you may not need to pay or run these tests again (these tests must still be morning fasted between 8 to 12 hours and no excessive exercise 24 hours prior to them being done).
Other Essentials We Will Need to Consider
- Exercise – if not already an experienced exerciser, we recommend having an assessment with a qualified exercise physiologist. They will be able to assess your physical abilities and limitation and prepare a starting program for you. Here are 2 great organisations we have worked with before – iNform Health and Fitness or MyPhysioSA
- Stress management – breath work, meditation, walking in nature, kundalini yoga, prayer, tech such as HeartMath and apps such as Headspace and Calm are excellent way of achieving this. ‘RevitaMind‘ recordings are a value cost effective way of achieve this important objective. Meditation on ‘steroids’ may be an overstatement but this is a passive way of ‘entraining‘ the brain to better function and connectivity.
- Brain Training – it causes the brain to make new synaptic connections and pathways and nerve cells to give you back what you might have lost or strengthen what you still have. Learning new things, dancing & QiGong (both also incorporating the exercise component of the protocol), believe it or not table tennis (more than a physical sport it requires significant spacial calculations from the brain) and BrainHQ is a highly recommended computer based brain training program and also tracks improvements in cognitive abilities.

ReCODE Protocol™
ReCODE Protocol™ is the only clinically proven program to reverse cognitive decline in early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. The ReCODE Program™ is intended for individuals who are currently experiencing symptoms of cognitive decline and are ready to engage in an intensive program to restore and enhance cognitive function while promoting overall health. It was designed for anyone experiencing subjective cognitive impairment (SCI), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and those with early-stage Alzheimer’s Disease. The program is most effective when used in the early stages, but we have examples of reversal in the mid to late stages.
The ReCODE Report®
The ReCODE Program relies upon the ReCODE Report — a highly individualized evaluation of your cognitive health analyzed by a software program created by Dr. Dale Bredesen and his team at Apollo Health. The report includes information on which of the six subtypes are contributing to your symptoms of cognitive decline and provides detailed, personalized instructions to specially address whatever is driving our symptoms, including nutritional, lifestyle, hormone, and supplement recommendations. The report will be generated following the completion of labs (not included and only available to those in the U.S.), medical questionnaires, and cognitive testing.
ReCODE Program Features:
- A ReCODE Report will be generated following labs (not included & only available to U.S. residents) and completion of an online medical questionnaire and cognitive assessments.
- Your ReCODE Report will specifically identify what is driving your current symptoms leading to an identification of your specific Alzheimer’s subtypes and provide personalized instructions, including comprehensive supplement recommendations designed to halt the progression and reverse symptoms of cognitive decline while optimizing overall health.
- The Practitioner and Coach Locator Tool is available to build the team you need to help ensure your success. Because the reversal of cognitive decline can be complex, we require you to work with a ReCODE Trained Primary Practitioner. We highly encourage you to consider working with a health coach and other supportive practitioners as needed. Your account will be seamlessly integrated with all members of your team, allowing for easy access, communication, and support.
- Complimentary BrainHQ account for brain stimulation workouts.
- Access to advanced cognitive assessments, including SLUMS or MoCA, AQ-21 (bi-annually), and CNS Vital Signs (monthly) to track your progress.
- Q & A opportunities with Dr. Bredesen through monthly Town Hall meetings, which will be videotaped and conveniently available to view at your convenience.
- A library of written and video guides for the reversal of cognitive decline, with detailed lifestyle and nutritional information, including simple and delicious KetoFLEX 12/3 recipes.
- Access to an online community for support and education.
- The ReCODE Mobile App helps simplify the protocol and ensure compliance.
There are two annual membership plans for the ReCODE Program that are billed monthly or at a discounted rate, annually at a discounted rate. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the duration of the ReCODE Program?
There is an initial sign up period of 12 months.
When will I notice improvements?
It is very dependent on compliance and the starting degree of cognitive decline. In the recently published clinical trial sometimes the positive changes were seen as early as 3 months, and by the end of the 9 month trial period greater changes were seen. We have a lot to uncover too, so outside of all the bells and whistles of a clinical trial this takes time and with a smaller support team and potential budget constraints it will also take longer to establish all the lifestyle and nutritional changes we will need to make.
Are supplements included?
No because supplementation is based on many factors, and are dependent on your results and your genetics/family history. These where and when needed incur an additional cost.
Are all the tests done at the beginning?
Yes these tests are done mostly at the start of your journey with us, there may be some exceptions. We will let you know when you require more.
Is testing optional?
Testing is not optional but if you are able to have your bloods done through your doctor or have been tested in the last month then you do not need to pay for these tests (please note: tests must be morning fasted between 8 to 12 hours and no excessive exercise 24 hours prior to them being done).
Can I claim nutritional medicine practitioner appointments through private health funds?
Yes you can, please advise us at the end of your sessions and we will provide claimable receipts. It important to ensure that you check with your own health fund, as it differs depending on the health provider and your cover. Some allow you to claim group sessions and others do not.
